High cholesterol and PCOS

Cholesterol is a kind of fat that is produced by our bodies and ingested by our diet. Abnormal cholesterol levels are not healthy and they can contribute to cardiovascular disease. If one has PCOS, their risk of cardiovascular disease is increased rapidly due to the higher risk of insulin resistance and obesity among women with PCOS.

About 70 percent of women with PCOS tend to have dyslipidemia, which contributes to increased levels of triglycerides (TG) and decreases levels of high-density lipoprotein-HDL which is a good cholesterol.

A doctor diagnoses abnormal cholesterol levels by taking your blood test. There are commonly four major fat components that can be listed on your lipid panel;

  • High-density lipoproteins,
  • low-density lipoproteins
  • triglyceride
  • total cholesterol

  • High-Density Lipoprotein (HDL) Triglycerides

HDL (High-Density Lipoprotein) is a “good” cholesterol. In adequate amounts, it helps to keep bad cholesterol from settling up in the blood vessels. A normal HDL level is to be above 40 mg/dL. In this condition, low HDL levels can hype up the risk of heart disease.

2)  Low-Density Lipoprotein ( LDL)

Low density lipoprotein is the bad form of cholesterol if put simply.  In case of high quantities, it is gradually accumulated on the walls of the blood vessels and creates blockages.

The current facts for LDL levels state that the levels are:

  • High from 160 to 190 mg/dL (4.15 to 5.00 mmol/L)

  • Optimal if less than 100 mg/dL ( 2.6 mmol/L)

  • Borderline high at 140 to 160 mg/dL (3.35 to 4.15 mmol/L)

  • Very high between or above 186 mg/dL (4.92 mmol/L)

  • Nearly optimal between 100 to 129 mg/dL (2.6 to 3.34 mmol/L)

3) Triglycerides

Triglycerides are like a storehouses for fats in your bloodstream, which your body uses as energy lately. When there is  higher levels of triglycerides in your body, it is  stored somewhere later usage. Triglycerides are usually increased if you have insulin resistance. High triglyceride levels develop your risk of suffering from heart diseases.

4) Total Cholesterol

Total cholesterol levels must be less than 200 mg/dL; according to the National Cholesterol Education Program (NCEP). Levels in between 200 and 239 mg/dL and are known as borderline for high cholesterol levels at 240 mg/dL (sometimes more than this) are considered high total cholesterol levels.

High cholesterol levels possibly put you at an higher risk for heart disease!

  • Treatment for High Cholesterol

If your cholesterol levels are high or abnormal, your doctor may suggest some dietary changes to improve your levels.

Reducing your consumption of saturated fat upto 6 percent of your total calories is mandatory. Sources of saturated fat  include butter, red meat, and processed poultry. Better replace sources of saturated fat with unsaturated fats such as olive oil, seeds, nuts, seeds, and avocados. Having a diet rich in fruits and vegetables, that contain phytonutrients and fiber, is also essential.
